BMC 4 Cylinder Farinas (ADO 9)(Austin Drawing Office)

The Wolseley 15/60 of December 1958 was the first of the badge engineered cars of BMC, which were based on the chassis and mechanics of the earlier A55 Cambridge. This was followed

by the Austin A55 MKII in January 1959. Subsequent models were the MG Magnette MKIII, Morris Oxford V (March) and Riley 4/68. The early models of 1959 had a smaller number plate light, the windscreen wipers parked on the driver’s side and the front doors had a small cut out at the top by the B post. The Austin had a streamlined flying A, but was replaced by a chrome strip in 1960. In 1960 estate models were added and were badged as the Austin A55 MKII Countryman and Morris Oxford V Traveller.

The cars had different front and rear ends and the levels of trim was different with the basic Cambridge; with its metal dash to the Wolseley, Riley, and MG with wood finishing’s and the Riley and MG versions were sportier models. Prices differed as well. The basic Cambridge was £801(Saloon) £915(Countryman); Morris Oxford V £815 87,432 built; Wolseley 15/60 £991 24,579 built; MG Magnette £1012 16,676 built; Riley 4/68 £1028 10,940 built.

The original design from Pininfarina looked more like the Peugeot 404 but Austins stylist Dick Burzi altered the front end and Sid Goble, styled the Nuffied brands depending on their price. The Austin cars were built at
riley_4-68.jpgLongbridge and the Nuffield brands at Cowley.

Cars were also built in Australia under the Austin, Morris and Wolseley names, but had the 1622cc engine and longer wheelbase from 1959. The Cambridge was sold as the Austin Cambrian in North America.
